High speed switch mode power supplies require extremely low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent series inductance (ESL) capacitors for input and output filtering. These requirements are beyond the practical limits of electrolytic capacitors, both aluminium and tantalums, but are readily met by stacking multilayer ceramic (MLCs) capacitors. KYOCERA AVX stacked ceramic capacitors are supplied with lead frames for either thru-hole or surface mount assembly. The lead frames act as stress relief for differences in coefficients of expansion between the large ceramic chip (10 ppm/°C) and the PC boards, and are offered in both horizontally and vertically stacked configurations.

KEMET’s KPS series surface mount Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitor utilises proprietary lead-frame technology to vertically stack one or two multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) into a single compact surface mount package. The attached lead-frame mechanically isolates the capacitors from the printed circuit board, therefore offering advanced mechanical and thermal stress performance. Isolation also addresses concerns for audible, microphonic noise that may occur when a bias voltage is applied. A two-chip stack offers up to double the capacitance in the same or smaller design footprint when compared to traditional surface mount MLCC devices. Providing up to 10mm of board flex capability.

TDK’s MLCC CKG series comprises products in which metal frames are attached to the terminal electrodes of the MLCC. The technology is also referred to as MEGACAP. Because the metal frame relieves mechanical stress and thermal shock, the CKG series is an extremely reliable product. In addition, the stacked type is effective in reducing mounting area because the stacked structure doubles the capacitance function.
